Bric-á-brac
Stara Kopalnia Gallery
Wałbrzych
2021
Curator:
Wojciech Kozłowski
Bric-a-brac*
For over 30 years, Paulina Komorowska-Birger has been using glass as the main material in her art. For the artist, it is like a transparent line drawing, with which she cuts various shapes out of the air. The process of pulling a glass thread is a painstaking stage in which the flame of the torch melts the glass again.
The exhibition at Stara Kopalnia is divided into two parts. The large video projection is a collage of frames showing a very ordinary activity – the daily act of drinking a glass of water. Every action can be significant, regardless of the end result.
In the gallery's underground, an exhibition is arranged, intended to be both a retrospective and a transfer of the artist's studio. Assemblages of ready-made objects surrounded by "protective" glass nets are placed on museum pedestals. They are bric-a-brac, but it's a paradoxical, self-ironic term. In a separate room, works from the last 30 years of the artist's work pile up, creating a multi-element installation – a story about creation and memory.
